In Brief: Unions. . . Detainees. . . Tigers. . . Lisbon. . . CART
- The beards at the head of the various trade unions are fond of blaming the banks and developers for the current mess. These same unions were and are principal contributors to the debacle and should now be subject to similar odium.

- The irony of the timing of the birth of Dublin Zoo's two new Celtic tiger cubs is unsurpassable.

- I agree with Oran Drumgoole that we should all attempt to inform ourselves on the Lisbon Treaty (Letters, July 31). However, being properly informed means hearing both sides of an argument. Mr Drumgoole recommends a visit to the websites of 'Yes' groups such as We Belong, Ireland for Europe, etc. In the interests of balance, I also recommend a visit to those websites which present the other side of the argument, such as those of the No2Lisbon2 Campaign, Anthony Coughlan's National Platform and Jens-Peter Bonde's euabc.

- The newly launched Cork to Middleton rail link has already been compared to Dublin's much-loved DART. It is therefore entirely appropriate that it should receive its own acronym -- the Cork Area Rapid Transit system, or CART.
Cork and Middleton residents can now proudly announce that they are taking the CART to work or shopping. The lower horsepower requirements of the CART will enable commuters to save on transport costs and contribute to a cleaner environment.
