ICTU campaign is about self-preservation
The campaign by the Irish Congress of Trades Unions (ICTU) to escalate the programme of self-destruction in the public sector should be seen for what it is, a simple act of self-preservation.
The union 'leadership' has until now enjoyed the warmest of comfort blankets. For years they sat in partnership talks, lapping up the largesse that came with the sedentary role of loyal government ally.
Then, when the storm of economic disaster battered everyone else in this land, union staff avoided pay cuts, being neither public sector nor private sector. They belong to a sector all their own, the 'insulated from reality' sector.
