I never wanted a role for monarch
YOUR correspondent Tom Cooper (Irish Independent, May 18) claims I suggested that "the Irish Government should consider a role for the British monarch in a new All-Ireland state, perhaps even a role as joint head of state".
I made no such suggestion. I asked, in the context of existing provisions of Bunreacht na hÉireann, what role might be considered for the President of Ireland and the British monarch within Northern Ireland in the event of unity without diminishing the role of the President.
If we are not prepared to consider how to facilitate such All- Ireland issues we are not really interested in a United Ireland. It seems to me that your correspondent is of a partitionist mentality and not capable of envisaging what a new United Ireland might be like.
