In reply to Tom Hayes (Letters, February 20): if Dev was more pragmatic he would have seen that the Allies won World War Two because of their scientists, and the best were German. Scientists were in the most honourable profession as they knew that Hitler was vile, and the best emigrated to the UK or US.
Bertrand Russell, speaking of his scientific community, said: "There lies before us, if we choose, continual progress in happiness, knowledge and wisdom. Remember our humanity and forget the rest. Shall we instead choose death, because we cannot forget our quarrels?"
Scientists saw nationalism as a sewer down which flowed the blood and wealth of Europe. No condolence for the death of nationalism; not to die for your country but to live, get educated and join the universal effort to push out the frontiers of knowledge.
