Hospital hygiene must be priority

In October last year, you published an account of an outbreak of clostridium difficile- related-infections in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. Several people had died and these deaths were referred to the coroner in order to establish whether infection was a factor.

I wrote to you at the time, and pointed out that in April 2009, a hygiene report had been issued in regard to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital which identified failures to comply with several important guidelines. The report also stated that one of the serious problems it highlighted had been identified following a previous inspection in January, 2007.

Last week, the Health Information and Quality Authority published the results of yet another inspection at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
