• We should recall the extraordinary event that occurred during World War One. In 1914, a spontaneous truce broke out between British and German combatants. "Enemies" entered no man's land, exchanged greetings and gifts and fraternised freely. Harmony prevailed.
Alas, the top brass on both sides eventually pressed troops back into battle. Yet, if only temporarily, the true spirit of Christmas caught hold – peace and goodwill.
