High praise for fallen Garda hero

Sir -- The tragic news of the drowning of the young brave garda, Ciaran Jones, at Ballysmuttan Bridge near Manor Kilbride in Co Wicklow, when he was swept away while trying to help and save others, was heartbreaking. He was an outstanding member of An Garda Siochana and an example for all young people interested in joining and training to be gardai. He obviously had the right spirit and work ethic, and understood service to the community. He behaved in the spirit in which gardai are meant to behave. He was a worthwhile person, a wonderful person, a great garda. He died young, but lived a worthwhile life. He's with God now.
While few gardai need to risk their lives, either off or on duty, all would benefit, and the community they are employed to serve would benefit, if they took this committed and brave young man, Garda Ciaran Jones, as their role model.
He deserves official recognition, from Garda headquarters and from the Government. And his family can be forever proud of him.
