Guns sacred in US

• Reading the Dwight D Eisenhower quote – "We merely want to live in peace with all the world, to trade with them, so that the products of our toil may be used for our schools and our roads and our churches, and not for guns and planes and tanks and ships of war"– in your editorial (Irish Independent, December 26) reminded me of another interesting quote from the same man.
In his first inaugural address, 'Ike' famously said: "A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both."
It appears to me, a lay observer of the reaction to the Sandy Hook massacre, that the Second Amendment to the US Constitution is something quite important to the American people.
