Gun argument is way off target

In advocating the right for people to own handguns, Kevin O'Mahony (Letters, July 28), writing from California, claims that statistics in the US show that libertarian gun laws have resulted in a widespread decrease in violent crime rates.
Unfortunately, he provides no references that would allow us to verify his clams.
In 2008, the 'Journal of Adolescent Health' published the results of a study of firearms suicide amongst under 21s in California from 1997 to 1999, which showed that suicide by firearms was a leading cause of death.
