Greyhounds truly have a dog's life
According to Barry Coleman (Letters, March 11) the greyhound industry "is based first and foremost on the wellbeing of the dogs that are its heart and soul".
Perhaps he would care to clarify how the industry can justify the thousands of greyhounds that are put down every year simply because they are not fast enough. The number of greyhounds that are "retired from the track" annually is around 8,000.
I suggest readers log on to any greyhound rescue site and read for themselves the fate of these unfortunate animals. English rescue centres are overflowing with unwanted Irish greyhounds.
It would be difficult for any compassionate individual to accept that the welfare of the dogs is paramount in this industry.
