Government wasting its period of grace

I must commend Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar for his honesty (which, I have no doubt, is motivated by a sense of patriotism) regarding the likelihood that Ireland will require a second bailout as a result of the continuing parlous state of our economy and public finances.
The reason why Dr Varadkar drew the ire of his fellow ministers was because he made the classic political gaffe, which is when a politician accidentally speaks the truth.
It is becoming disconcertingly clear that the Government is going to waste the precious opportunity afforded to it by the period of grace (lasting about six months maximum) that all new governments are typically afforded, by the electorate, after taking office.
