Good soldiers
By 1942, it was quite clear what the Nazi regime had in mind for the Jews, Poles, Gypsies, homosexuals, political opponents, religious leaders or the mentally ill.
It is we who should honour our Irish who, in the middle of a war already infamous for atrocities, where the most fundamental principles of humanity were being violated, stepped out from the veil of neutrality and, like the good Samaritan, broke our silence by action.
These men were the embodiment of that monumental effort of Irishmen through the centuries to improve the circumstances of the world, aid advances towards greater justice, wider brotherhood, and a more humane social environment.
