Electric cars pay only €146 road tax, are exempt from VRT, receive a €5,000 grant and avoid the excise duty paid on petrol and diesel.

Local road authorities spend twice as much on roads as they receive from motor taxes and the NRA has been spending about €5bn a year on national roads.
