God in details

• As I passed through primary school, then secondary school, I never stopped to question the staples of Catholicism present every day. The photograph of the Sacred Heart on the wall, the couple of hours a week we were taught 'religion'. It wasn't so much religion as a lesson in how to be a good Catholic.

It is only now in my 20s that I wonder why on earth religion was ever an element of my education.

Parents will argue that it is their tradition and their children should be brought up in the same passive religious environment as they were.
