Global warming
Sir - In the Fifties, forecasting the weather was as simple as glancing at the barometer. However, our barometer could be relied upon to remain stuck on "rain to fair".
I knew I could always depend on the weather forecasts from Radio Eireann, which, reassuringly, used words like "might" and "possibly". Needless to say, there was no talk of global warming in the hazy Fifties. .
So what's so special about the early 21st century? If the 1883 globe-shakingKrakatau eruption didn't affect my grandfather's goosepimpled dips in Killala Bay, why should fossil fuel burning be such a big deal now?
Anyway, if I'm to take the scientific community at their word, it's probably too late to avoid being slowly fried. So I might as well hope the "experts" have it wrong and we can then return to the guessing game weather forecasting used to be in the Fifties. Pocket money might well have been in short supply, but at least you didn't have to worry about the weather.
