Gilmore fails to grasp Syrian arms dilemma

• So, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore believes that sending arms to the Syrian rebels would be a bad idea. He states: "The more arms that go into Syria, the more casualties there will be." What he fails to realise is that casualties are going to occur whether the arms embargo is lifted or not.

Bashar al-Assad is a man who is deluded with power. He started this terrible civil war when he ordered his soldiers to attack innocent and peaceful protesters. This is a man who authorises the use of chemical weapons against his own citizens and has approved the bombing of civilian neighbourhoods.

The only chance of securing a free and peaceful society in Syria in the future is to force out Assad. The rebels cannot oust this dictator without the help of sovereign nations, such as ours, who are dedicated to the pursuit of democracy the world over.
