Getting to the heart of presidential campaign
BRUCE Arnold in his article "Why Gaybo should never be voted into the Aras" (Irish Independent, June 8) gets to the heart of the matter. What qualifies Byrne as President? He did good work on TV/radio in an age of innocence, when the confession box was being abandoned in favour of new confessors, but how does that past role qualify him to succeed two excellent Presidents, Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese?
Does this not tells us that (and Byrne typifies this) political parties are not fit to nominate candidates, and if FF backs him it shows the depths to which this party has plummeted?
And does RTE have the right to choose our President from its ranks? If so, why not nominate Jimmy Magee, Pat Kenny, Marian Finucane, Miriam O' Callaghan, Joe Duffy . . . but maybe the Aras money is too small for them? And when will we have the 'Liveline' poll on 'Gay for the Aras?'
