Gardai lacking in commitment

MAY I be allowed to reply to the chap from Scotland and his weird opinions of our police force (Irish Independent, April 29).
It was the garda public relations office that claimed, many years ago, that we had the finest police force in Europe but then they would, wouldn't they?
I'd like to take our Scottish friend for a long walk around our capital city and note the almost complete absence of uniformed gardai patrolling (as the police do across 'the pond') our streets. Then there is the situation when our gardai arrive, sometimes long after a crime has been committed, and "investigate".
