From envy of Europe to blundering mess

In January 2000, and after 14 years travelling and working across most of Europe, I returned home to my beloved Ireland with a new sense of enthusiasm and confidence.
Like many others, I believed wholeheartedly that our country had become the beacon of Europe where others would look on in envy and oh how proud we all were to be part of this coming of age.
Our government officials were applauded, our financial system was rated one of the best in the world, our economy was so marvelled at that TV crews from the four corners of the earth came here to make documentaries about us.
