Forget pooches, focus on water

Madam -- Eoghan Harris is right to brand Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council's preoccupation with the presence of dogs at Seapoint bathing area as "A Dog Poop Distractor Campaign". The contrary obsession with dogs and a minority of rogue owners who don't poop-scoop distracts from the more serious matter of sewage overflow from the West Pier that follows heavy rainfall.

I do not own a dog but I do swim at Seapoint all year round and am well acquainted with the non-biodegradable debris that Mr Harris speaks of. The overflow of sewage from the outlet at Salthill/Monkstown would appear to confirm why the council has failed to submit Seapoint to the Blue Flag test in recent years.

The dogs should be left alone and the council should concentrate its efforts on the quality of the water.
