•I have spent the past 40 years working in construction in New York and I am just home for a flying visit for the first time in 15 years. I'm writing because I'm not sure if I've arrived in the right country.

In the 1960s there were three pillars of our establishment: if you were smart and middle-class, you ended up in the bank; if you were smart and poor, you might end up in the church; and if you were none of the above you joined Fianna Fail.

So what the hell has happened? I read last week that the Dublin Diocese is broke and thinking of imposing a levy on its flock.
