For the birds

• It was with a heavy heart that I broke the news to the occupants of my three leased houses that there was going to be a €100 levy from next year and that I must unfortunately pass it on to my tenants.

At number one house, the robin eyeballed me, turned his tail and briskly returned to his home, muttering: "For one room, you must be joking." At number two house, the jackdaws kicked up quite a flutter and cawed that they were only renting and should not have to pay it. And at number three, to add insult to injury, the owl didn't seem to give a hoot.

So now, whoever said that this Government was away with the birds could be right.
