•What will be the legacy of Brian Cowen? Long before Bertie Ahern stood down as Taoiseach in 2008, it was apparent that Mr Cowen would replace him.
Why? He was not your typical Taoiseach -- he was rough around the edges, he certainly didn't have the charismatic charm of Ahern -- but he did seem to be competent in his political endeavours. Weren't we the fools?
Mr Cowen, as Finance Minister, put this country into a deep recession, one where the light at the end of the tunnel seems light years away. Once again, a generation had to up and leave their place in search of a space that could provide jobs . Families' lives have been destroyed. Harsh, one might say. But the reality is that he convinced his government and the Irish people that he was putting forward a budget that best served the Irish people.
