Follow apology and prosecute

Madam – In the true spirit of better late than never, Taoiseach Enda Kenny gives an overdue apology to the victims of the Magdalene Laundries. But in reality it was more of an acceptance of guilt and failure by the State to protect vulnerable, fragile and defenceless women who were subjected to exploitation and in many cases cruelty at the hands of nuns.

Compensation and acknowledgement of culpability aside, justice in all its forms protects the blameless, so let us now give more than just words and financial reimbursement back to those who suffered in silence for so many years.

It is now essential the State tries in earnest to exorcise the demons that still terrorise the minds and lives of the innocent by rooting out and prosecuting those responsible for the brutal regime inflicted on the laundry interns/prisoners.
