Flood prevention work ignored
LAST year in Cork we had floods that were described as "a once-in-800-years occurrence."
River banks along the Lee burst and caused great hardship in the city and towns of the county.
There was relief that such torrents would not happen again for almost a millennium.
Perhaps this is why repairs and safeguards have been all but ignored during the past year.
The thing is, coming up to the anniversary of the disaster, we discovered that after half a day's rain, flooding was again a feature of our lives last week.
