Fine Gael should learn from the lessons of history and seek to govern as a single-party government with the support of a small number of sensible Independents.

The last major recession, in the mid-'80s, showed us that a philosophically conflicted Fine Gael-Labour coalition could not do what was required to save our country.

The traditional instincts of Fine Gael -- those of prudence and careful management -- are needed now more than ever.
