Faith is not an abhorrent ideal

I was bemused to read letters in your newspaper criticising David Quinn for his suggestion that the Chilean miners were sustained in their ordeal by their faith in God (Irish Independent, October 15).
It would appear that your correspondents were in such a rush to attack any suggestion that belief in God can prove beneficial that they neglected to read Mr Quinn's article.
Had they actually read it they would have seen that he did not opine on whether or not God directed the rescue, merely that the miners had faith, and that they publicly avowed that their faith aided them.
