Facts of life

• Kevin Myers (Irish Independent, July 17) articulated what many feel but few have the courage to say. I left community work seven years ago as I felt the welfare system was anti-work and anti those returning to work.

Two years ago, I fell on ice and broke a rib. I waited 13 hours for treatment in A&E. I watched drinkers and drug addicts being treated immediately.

I got a lecture for complaining, and a bill within 24 hours for €100 -- despite paying tax and PRSI all my adult life. I concluded at that point that Ireland's economic and moral collapse was inevitable.
