Extra motor tax is just appalling

Sir -- On renewing the motor tax on my car recently, my options were as follows: one year at €582; a half-year at €323; a quarter-year at €164. I was surprised to see it costs an additional €64-€74 to pay by the half or quarter-year.

At a time when most mortgage holders are struggling to make their monthly payments, a half million are on the dole and many, many more thousands are struggling to put food on the table each day, gouging car owners for additional tax if they are poor or cash-strapped is appalling.

The stock excuse is, of course, that there are more administration costs if you pay by instalments. Well, if it costs the Government €64 extra to handle one additional online transaction, I would have to question its cost structure. But, of course, we already know the Government's cost structure is unsustainable and unconscionable. And no, before you say they need the money to maintain the roads, the potholes from last winter are still not fixed.
