• The EU summit agreement is a significant result for the Irish Government, a vindication of much hard work and patience. However, much news coverage seems to have missed the political trends which made it possible, which are now clearly pointing to a new direction for Europe.
Europe was dominated for many years, until recently, by conservative leaders. However, pressure from the European Parliament, the election of Socialist President Hollande in France and increasing confidence of the German Social Democrats in the Bundestag have given this new direction in EU politics the crucial push.
That political context, combined with failing conservative policies, is what allowed Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti to make his move at the summit and deliver the deal.
