• Michael Brennan reported on the beginning of the Irish EU Presidency ('Enda Kenny promises 2013 will be a year of new hope', January 1).
This year marks the 40th anniversary of our entry into the EU. The presidency reminds us that our prosperity depends on international co-operation and global stability. For this reason, we must take the opportunity of the presidency to champion progress toward a fairer, more stable international community.
Our presidency coincides with the European Year of the Citizen, a year to celebrate the role of 'people power' in shaping a fairer Ireland, Europe and global community.
It is good to see the Irish Independent covers issues relating to the presidency, and the important choices that European governments – and citizens – will have to make in the next few months. For only an informed and empowered citizenry can shape the forces of globalisation.
