EU budget role fears justified
BRIAN Lenihan has accused Fine Gael's Richard Bruton of "stirring up anti-EU sentiment" for "narrow political purposes" with his criticism of the Government's attitude to recent budgetary proposals by the EU Commission.
This is a bit rich. Has he forgotten that in March 2008, the Government of which he was a member, attempted to blame Brussels for the water charges being levied on schools?
It was subsequently shown that these charges were the result of the incompetence of the Government in failing to obtain a derogation for schools from the 1999 EU Water Directive, and not any EU decision.
