Equal scrutiny for candidates
Sir -- I am shocked at the imbalance in the coverage of the presidential election by the media.
For whatever reason it is painfully obvious that Michael D Higgins is not going to be subjected to any reasonable scrutiny or questioning.
For example, why is he not asked how he reconciles his very well-articulated socialism with him accepting a pension while receiving a salary during his time as a TD? He had to be dragged kicking and screaming to accept the downright shame of that situation. He now advises that he will forgo his three State pensions if he becomes President. This magnanimous gesture to live off €250,000 per annum, plus expenses, is indeed worthy of even the greatest socialist. However, when he retires from that position will he then have four State pensions?
