Empty heads

• I am afraid that Micheal O Fearghail's appeal to our ideologically impaired Education Minister, Ruairi Quinn, to restore the teaching of multiplication tables in primary school will fall on deaf ears.

Mr Quinn, together with the avant-garde "educationalists" who campaign against storing knowledge in one's brain, evidently believes that the best basis for intellectual achievement is an empty mind.

Instead of stocking able young minds with material for thought, he seems to be aiming at the creation of curiously empty-minded thinkers and philosophers of some kind -- and that already in primary and secondary school, for God's sake!
