Electorate was culprit all along

Madam -- In his article (Sunday Independent, February 19, 2012) in the Business Section, Paddy Cosgrave is wide of the mark when he blames our financial ills on academics and intellectuals.
The culprit was the Irish electorate who returned to power for 17 consecutive years a Fianna Fail government that allowed an unregulated economy to run itself to ground in a country awash with greed and grandeur. He goes on to quote Victor Klemperer who blamed academics for the Nazification of Germany. German Nazification began as far back as 1850. If Germany ever breaks free of the EU, that same militarism will be evident again. Klemperer was an academic himself, a lecturer in French in the Technical University in Dresden and probably had his own axe to grind. As for the academics in the US who promoted a business culture in the Twenties and Thirties, their efforts hit the rocks a few decades later with the fall of Lehmans.
