Efficient terminal can be expanded

John Stafford ('Airport hopes fail to take off', Letters, October 19), is inaccurate in his assertion that Dublin Airport's new Terminal 2 "cannot be expanded" and wrongly infers that Dublin Airport is not competitive enough to attract and sustain significant additional transatlantic traffic, as major European airports such as Heathrow become increasingly congested.
When Terminal 2 opens next month, it will expand the overall capacity of Dublin Airport and allow upwards of 30 million passengers to travel through the airport at appropriate levels of comfort, efficiency and safety.
As part of Dublin Airport Authority's longer-term planning -- for all likely aviation scenarios at Dublin Airport -- Terminal 2 has also been designed to enable cost-efficient expansion, when required, of both the main terminal building itself and for the construction of an additional pier or boarding gate facility, thereby providing significant new capacity.
