Educate yourself on tough life of a teacher

I WOULD like to add my tuppence worth to the debate regarding teachers.
My French wife is a newly passed English teacher here in France, and although the French system is somewhat different from the Irish one regarding qualifications, examinations, etc, she still gets people complaining that she has an easy, cushy job with few hours and, even for France, long holidays.
Although my example is a French one, the criticisms are the same as I have read in the letters page for Irish teachers, so I thought I would enlighten readers as to what this 'cushy number' with plenty of holidays actually consists of.
