Next week, the Road Safety Authority is due to implement a requirement of driving in 12 lessons with the aid of a sponsor, who must be a full licence holder.
Driving instructors must buy the books, deliver the 12 lessons, sign and stamp the lesson result.
In the first three months of 2011, 56 road users were killed in Ireland, 15 more than in the same period in 2010, but the RSA and An Garda Siochana say it is too early to discern a trend. This despite almost three times more drivers receiving penalty points for speeding this year than last.
