Dreading winter

•During the bad winter of 2009-10 and the worse one in 2010-11, we had Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore protesting that more should be done for the elderly and disabled in those situations. The gruesome twosome and their parties get elected and look at us now.

The Household Benefit Package is being savaged by Joan Burton, meaning a reduced telephone allowance, also the free electricity units are being cut by 25pc. The additional 12pc rise in electricity prices in October means a very uncertain winter ahead for the elderly and disabled.

This does not take into account the pending reduction in welfare in the November Budget. I always said that Fine Gael and Labour were no friends of the vulnerable and this performance clearly proves it.
