Dragged down by our love of pathos

EXCESSIVE diagnosis has become the new 'ballad' in Irish national discourse.
For too long, we Irish became a caricature of ourselves on the world stage for our love of mawkish sentimentality as we blamed our failures on the English, the Devil or plain bad luck.
But singing or drinking our way into a state of emotional inoculation has never done and will never do anything to deal with the core problem lying at the heart of our society, which is our wretched love of pathos.
