Down boy

Friday February 03 2012

Every time I see Enda Kenny on the European stage he reminds me of a chihuahua running with the big dogs of France and Germany. Confident as you like and eager to please, he barks the bark and carries himself accordingly. The picture of Nicolas Sarkozy patting his head (Irish Independent, January 31) reinforces my analogy. Perhaps this show of affection was a reward for Enda finally admitting that it was the people who went crazy borrowing and not a couple hundred developers. Therefore, it's the people who should pay the price.

Enda is eager to push Europe's new pact, which will oblige member states to keep their budget deficit below 3pc of gross domestic product (GDP) and ensure public debt does not exceed 60pc of GDP. The irony is that, had this treaty been in place a few years ago, we would not have been able to bail out the banks as we would have exceeded the 60pc limit.

I urge Enda to remember that it is the banks and developers who went crazy borrowing and are being bailed out by the people. Until such time as the Government introduces some sort of forgiveness on personal debt, I'd urge Enda not to hang the people of Ireland out to dry.
