Different factors influence wages

Great pay divide says the Irish Independent headline (March 16) when reporting CSO earning statistics. The implication is of course, that public sector workers are overpaid compared to the private sector.
Such simplistic conclusions are of course meaningless. The use of the word "counterpart" was exceptionally misleading as CSO statistics do not examine the fundamental differences in the job descriptions between each group.
A teacher with 20 years' experience who works full-time will earn more than a part-time worker in a fast food outlet, yet no one would regard these as fair comparisons.
