Dev was far from friend of Hitler

JAMES Rogers’ description of Eamon de Valera as "a great supporter of Hitler" (Letters, October 1) does not tally with fact.

Firstly, Mr de Valera spurned a British proposal for Irish political unity in return for Irish entry into the war on the Allied side.

Mr de Valera's resolve to remain outside the conflict was endorsed by all political parties in the Dail, including strong supporters of the Allied cause.
