Dental benefits cut will cost us

As indicated by Irish Dental Association chief executive Fintan Hourihan ('Taxpayers told time is running out for claiming free dental care', Irish Independent, December 18, 2009), the narrow window provided for patients to retain certain dental benefits for treatment since relevant cuts were announced in the December Budget has now closed, as of January 1.
It was unacceptable that the Government gave only three weeks' notice of a low-key nature about the cuts, especially as public attention is typically most distracted during the Christmas season.
At the very least, the Government should recognise their shortcomings in this regard and re-open the window for a duration of at least three months.
