Democracy will be the real loser
Sir -- Celia Larkin's article on the rise of Sinn Fein (Sunday Independent, November 21) shrewdly predicts the effect the IMF 'bailout' will have on the next General Election. Yes, it is likely that Sinn Fein will make electoral gains now that Gerry Adams (like Lenin in 1917) is rushing 'home' for the long-awaited revolution in Irish politics. However, it is unlikely that SF will gain 40 per cent of the vote. Nor will Fine Gael or Labour reap much electoral benefit either.
It is most likely that voter apathy will increase and street violence may worsen as economic hardship hits home. We are in unknown territory now and the loser will surely be democratic politics
