Defining TG4's real role

Sir -- In response to John Keane's letter to the Sunday Independent (January 29, 2012), may I ask: Would you expect that after having studied Honours Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) French, Spanish, German, etc, to be able to understand, with complete fluency, radio and television broadcasts in those languages in the spheres of current affairs, literature, agriculture, global politics or the like?

Would you expect RTE or the BBC to treat with any degree of seriousness a complaint about the speed in delivery of their broadcasts in English?

Should the editors of La Repubblica curb their use of Italian deemed obscenely highbrow by even the keenest learner?
