Debt forgiveness is out of the question

ON mortgage defaulters, (Irish Independent, Letters, June 29) I would go one step further and make these people surrender their passport and sign on everyday at their local garda station. Anyone who thinks they can walk away from their debt and leave the tab for the taxpayer is living in dreamland. If the debt is not paid off by the time they retire, their children should be lumbered with it.
To listen to these people blame the banks, one would be under the impression they came down the stairs one morning and found the money had been shovelled through the letter box. Guidance and support is one thing, forgiveness is out of the question -- we can't afford it.
