Debate on Shell

Sir -- Your columnist Jim Cusack's report (Sunday Independent 25 July, 2010) concerning the proposal by Shell to construct a raw gas pipeline in north-west Mayo unfortunately fogs the real issues that lie at the heart of this conflict. Sensational allegations, emanating from anonymous sources about alleged visits by unnamed individuals to the Rossport Solidarity Camp, add little to the debate about how this State manages its natural resources.
While Mr Cusack suggests that supporters of the project are angry at "repeated delays" to the project, readers should be reminded of the reason. Last November, An Bord Pleanala ruled that information supplied by Shell "was not a complete, transparent or adequate demonstration that the high-pressure pipeline did not pose an unacceptable risk to the public".
The ruling was a clear vindication of the community's concerns.
