Dawkins's stunt trivialised abuse
I read Medb Ruane's gushing article about Richard Dawkins with some amusement from this side of the Irish Sea ('Will Dawkins finally put an end to the Vatican's contract with Mussolini?', Irish Independent, April 17).
I think the consensus here is that Mr Dawkins's publicity stunt has achieved three things:
- Trivialised the abuse issue for narrow political and self-aggrandising ends.
- Tapped into our embarrassing history of papist bashing.
- And having described the Pope as "a leering old villain in a frock", provoked a wave of relief across the Oxford campus that Mr Dawkins no longer holds a chair there.
