Davitt was our greatest patriot
Sir -- Well done to Cathal MacCarthy (Sunday Independent, September 26, 2010), for highlighting the glaring omission of Michael Davitt from the shortlist for the title of Ireland's Greatest. One can only speak of Michael Davitt and his achievements in superlative terms.
In addition to the many achievements listed by Cathal, he was a person of great moral and physical courage, as well as transparent integrity, and he remained independent of power, honour or purse. He was passionate in his desire to change institutions, laws, public policy and society to serve the needs of all the people and not a privileged few.
In my view, Michael Davitt was the greatest patriot to grace the pages of history.
